Environmental Standard MIL STD 810F
We have recently completed a full environmental
evaluation of one of our Military Tactical
Amplifiers the KMW2030, which covers the
30 to 512 MHz band with 125 Watt output power
for just 1 watt input power. These tests
are extensive and time consuming, but once
completed you have the assurance that the
equipment can deal with some pretty arduous
conditions. Often referred to simplistically
as “Shake and Bake” there is
in fact a lot more than just vibration and
heat testing done to the equipment. The KMW2030
data sheet now lists the full set of tests that
the US Army insisted on being completed before
shipment of a recent large order. The following
text shows the summary of those tests, if
you need more detail on the actual tests
we can send you that material or you can
download the complete 810F spec from the
Web.
1. Humidity:
Mil-Std 810F, Method 507.4, para.4.5.2
24 hour pre-conditioning @ 23c & 50%
RH and then 5-48 hour temp./humidity cycles
with extremes of 60c 95% RH, 30c 95% RH and
20c 95% RH. Operational test to be performed
every 24 hours. 11 days duration
2. Salt Fog:
Mil-Std 810F, Method 509.4, para.4.5.2
Pre-condition sample @ 35c for 2 hours prior
to start of test. Expose sample to 24 hours
of 5% salt fog exposure, remove sample from
chamber for 24 hours of drying, place sample
back into chamber for another 24 hour 5%
exposure and remove from chamber for another
24 hour drying period. 4 days duration
3. Sand & Dust:
Mil-Std 810F, Method 510.4, para.4.4.2
Per procedure 1 of Mil-Std-810F. 1 day duration
4. Altitude (Storage):
Mil-Std 810F, Method 500.4, para.4.5.2
Adjust to 15,000 f t. with sample in it's
storage/transport configuration. Maintain
Altitude for 1 hour. Return to site pressure
and conduct operational check. 4 hours duration
5. Altitude (Operation):
Mil-Std 810F, Method 500.4, para.4.5.3
Adjust to 15,000 f t. with sample in its
operational configuration. Conduct operational
check of sample. Return to site pressure
and conduct operational check. 4 hours duration
6. High Temperature
(Storage):
Mil-Std 810F, Method 501.4, para.4.5.2
Stabilize sample @ +70c. Maintain temperature
for 2 hours. Return sample to ambient temperature
and perform operational check. 1 day duration
7. High Temperature
(Operation):
Mil-Std 810F, Method 501.4, para.4.5.3Stabilize
sample @ +50c. Maintain temperature for
2 hours with sample operating. Return sample
to ambient temperature and perform operational
check. 1 day duration
8. Low Temperature
(Storage):
Mil-Std 810F, Method 502.4, para.4.5.2
Stabilize sample @ -40c. Maintain temperature
for 2 hours. Return sample to ambient temp.
and perform operational check. 1 day duration
9. Low Temperature
(Operation):
Mil-Std 810F, Method 502.4, para.4.5.3
Stabilize sample @ -20c. Maintain temperature
for 2 hours with sample operating. Return
sample to ambient temp. and perform operational
check. 1 day duration
10. Temperature Shock(Steady
State):
Mil-Std 810F, Method 503.4, para.4.4.2.1
With sample @ ambient temp. place into chamber
@ -40c and stabilize sample, transfer in
less than 1 minute to chamber @ +70f & 25%
RH and stabilize, then transfer in less than
1 minute to chamber @ +50c and stabilize
sample. Return sample to ambient temp and
perform operational check. 2 chambers required.
10 hours duration
11. Vibration (General):
Mil-Std 810F, Method 514.5, para.4.5.2
Various levels and duration of vibration
in three axis, with up to 3G transitions.
Operational tests to be made before during
and after the testing. 4 hours duration
12. Vibration (Loose
Cargo) Modified:
Mil-Std 810F, Method 514.5, para.4.5.3
With sample packaged and unrestrained, using
1 inch constant vertical linear motion, expose
for
1 hour with bottom of package down, stop
exposure and perform operational check of
sample. Place back onto shaker with bottom
of package facing parallel to the shaker
head and expose for another hour. Remove
from shaker and perform functional check.
5 hours duration
13. Shock (Functional):
Mil-Std 810F, Method 516.5, para.4.5.2.3
With sample operating, expose sample to 3
pulses/direction of saw tooth shock @ 40g
11ms. 6 directions for a total of 18 pulses.
Operational check of sample to be performed
following exposure. 4 hours duration
